Antwan McKoy, 37, of Maple Shade, NJ, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and harassment, said Bensalem police in a release.
According to investigators, McKoy and his wife were visiting her mother at the Bucks Meadow Apartments on June 19 of last year. Michael Whispell, McKoy's brother-in-law, was staying at the apartment at the time.
At some point during the visit, McKoy and Whispell got into an argument and each man stood up, the department said. McKoy allegedly grabbed Whispell and began choking him, authorities claimed.
Whispell responded by throwing a punch at McKoy, the DA said. In turn, McKoy punched Whispell twice in the temple and threw him to the ground, causing him to hit his head, according to police.
McKoy then jumped on top of Whispell, but family members broke up the fight before it could continue, investigators believe.
Later that night, Whispell said he couldn't sleep because of head pain, police. First responders were called to the home, but while Whispell was being taken to the hospital, he lost consciousness, authorities said.
Doctors placed Whispell into a medically-induced coma from which he never woke up, the department said. He died on July 4, and his cause of death was later ruled "complications of blunt impact injury to the head," police added.
According to court filings, McKoy was arraigned early on Friday and his bail was set at 10 percent of $5 million. The 37-year-old has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 23.
